Whether you're prepping for an exam or just trying to hit a vocab milestone, these lists give you a clear target. Pick your level, browse what you don't know yet, then load the CSV into the SRS game to start drilling. The spaced repetition handles the scheduling so you just show up. If you're not sure where to start, N5 or Optimized Kore are both solid entry points that cover the most common words first.
The starting point. 668 words covering everyday basics: numbers, time, family, common verbs. If you're just getting started, this is where to begin.
Builds on N5 with more verbs, adjectives, and grammar-adjacent vocab. You'll start recognizing a lot more in everyday conversations.
The middle ground. N3 covers a wide mix: news vocab, workplace words, abstract concepts. Clearing this level noticeably opens up native content.
Getting serious. N2 is often the threshold for work and university in Japan. Dense vocab with a lot of kanji compounds you'll see in formal writing.
The top tier. Low-frequency but precise vocabulary: literature, legal, medical, classical references. Most learners spend years here.
